Medicare Part D · Prescription drug plans

The right drug plan starts with your actual list.

Part D plans cover prescriptions, but each one has its own drug list, tiers, and pharmacy network. Send us your medications and our licensed agents will compare the Part D plans we represent for what you'd actually pay over the year.

How Part D works

Where your drug costs come from

Most Part D plans have the same building blocks. Amounts are set by each plan and by Medicare each year, so we check the current numbers for you.

1

Monthly premium

What you pay each month for the plan. Some people with higher incomes pay an extra amount set by Medicare.

2

Deductible

Some plans have a deductible you pay before coverage starts on certain tiers. Some have none.

3

Copays & coinsurance

Your share each time you fill a prescription, depending on the drug's tier and your pharmacy.

4

Yearly out-of-pocket limit

Medicare sets an annual cap on what you pay for covered drugs.

Words you'll hear

Part D in plain English

Formulary

The plan's list of covered drugs. It can change from year to year.

Tiers

Drug groups with different costs. Lower tiers (often generics) usually cost less.

Preferred pharmacy

A pharmacy in the plan's network where you may pay less than at other pharmacies.

Prior authorization

The plan has to approve a drug before it will cover it.

Step therapy

You may need to try a lower-cost drug first before the plan covers another one.

Mail order

Many plans let you get a 90-day supply by mail, sometimes at a lower cost.

Don't skip it

The Part D late enrollment penalty

If you go without Part D or other creditable drug coverage (coverage at least as good as Medicare's) for a continuous period of 63 days or more after your Initial Enrollment Period ends, you may pay a late enrollment penalty added to your premium for as long as you have Part D.

Have coverage through work or a union? Your plan should send you a yearly notice saying whether your drug coverage is creditable. Keep it. We can help you read it.

Even if you take few or no medications today, it's worth talking through whether a plan makes sense for you.

FAQ

Part D questions

Do I need Part D if I don't take any medications?

You're not required to have it, but if you don't have other creditable drug coverage and enroll later, you may pay a late enrollment penalty. We can talk through your situation.

Can I change my Part D plan?

Yes, during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7) for coverage starting January 1, and at other times if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Do Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage?

Many do. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, you generally don't buy a separate Part D plan.

Is there help paying for Part D?

Yes. People with limited income and resources may qualify for Extra Help from Medicare. We can point you to how to apply.

Why did my drug costs change in January?

Plans can change premiums, deductibles, drug lists, and tiers each year. That's why a fall review matters.
